Located in the border of Chile and Argentina, Pascua-.Lama is an open pit mining full of gold in silver. A big riche mountain of 4,500 meters of altitude is obviously a priceless project for gold mining extractors who are at the moment, developing an extraction plan. The problem is that the international opinion and the population of Chile are proceeding to pressures by making petitions and manifestations, all dedicated to the Chilean government. These demonstrations from the population are illustrating many problems and according to me, the Chile and the Argentina shouldn’t approve this project .The environmental consequences are the first reasons why they have to refuse it because first ,the project is a high-cost idea with a no respect of the population’s values and their way of living. Plus, the Pascua-Lama extraction would have environmental consequences.
First of all, the Pascua-Lama required a removed of huge glaciers. It looks to me like a really expensive and unreal project, showing a big disrespect to the population For example, in 2000, an appeal was filed with the Chilean Constitutional Court to rule the treaty unconstitutional. Many people living on agriculture are also demanding help from the tribunal because they claimed the lost of many hectares form their propriety. The extraction company never asked their permissions and that clearly shows disrespect. Second, the company, say that the used of chemical products is something they cannot avoid for a good extraction of gold but they forget and essential point. The pollution caused by the product would have irreversible consequences such as the contamination of the water, the ground and the air. The appearance of cancers and other sickness won’t be long to show up.
The Toronto Company in charged of the Pascua-Lama project would create an environmental disaster with is dream realisation. The area located in the border of Chile and Argentina is an arid and dry place. The removed of the glacier would destroy all the chances to find drinkable water in the valley killing at the same time the entire agricultural sector. The company also close it eyes on all a fragile ecosystem, drinkable water is maybe exportable, but animals plans and lives in general are in danger for a contains estimated deposited of 17 millions ounces of gold and 635 million ounces of silver. The native groups would also be forced to extinction.
Barrick Gold says that the project is environmentally friendly considering the water treatment. They also pretended that the project will create 5,500 jobs during the mine's construction period but all I see is a tones of problem for the population and for the environment in the near future. We cannot forget that this environmental zone was initially protected and owned by “l’UNESCO” but they retired the protection in 1994, just before Barrick takes possession of it. . If you do believe in humanity and in good values, you will probably be agreed that it is the biggest mistake Argentine ever did.
